I've never been interested in making paintings that reveal themselves easily or that are about one thing. I've always loved paintings that can be discovered and then rediscovered, seeing different things each time you look at them. This Broken Canvas painting was commissioned by a couple of friends. They loved the whole idea of the Broken Canvas and as I recall they wanted these colors used but left the rest up to me. It was funny to me to create a Broken Canvas by commission as the whole reality of it literally being broken open and abstract contrasted with having it fulfill a commission just seemed strange. But of course they loved it and I got paid so it was all good. I also really like this one because it's so precise and clean and fun to visually cruise around in.

Keith was a work mate in the construction crew I was part of during this time. He lived in a communal warehouse space in San Francisco and they had enough open space to allow me to stage my Second Solo Show of paintings. It required me and Olga and my good friend Larry to construct walls made from hanging hand-sewn custom curtains (thank you Olga!) off metal conduit pipes suspended from the ceiling, and then to carefully hang the paintings off the pipe lengths and off of each other with fishing line. We were able to contruct these floating curtain walls in this big open space and managed to sort of hide the areas outside these walls where people were living. And we also had to hang our own lighting to illuminate all the paintings. It was a lot of work to put it all together. Keith fell in love and purchased this Painting No. 94 after he laughed out loud when he first saw it. He had been a medic in the Vietnam war when he was a young man and so hearing him laugh so heartily always brought me joy. Thanks Keith!

This was the first painting where I played with the notion of having a child in my life. My mother Carol Ann saw this at one of my shows and loved it and bought it because she was a mother of five children and adored the notion of me having kids one day. But she also knew that it wasn't my plan, nor was it Olga's plan, so perhaps she figured this little painting was all she would ever see of her son with a child.
Ironically it was due to behavior from her and my father while I was growing up that led me to not wanting children as they would only add to my burden, as it were. And so making this painting was also interesting because it speaks to a possiblity that never happened for me yet it was still there in my mind as a concept. Later in life I would work with a naturopathic doctor who quite clearly and firmly stated that only an imbalanced person does not want children, as wanting and having children is a natural part of being human. Not sure if I agree but I do understand his point. Of course since working with him I have become completely balanced, haha.
